Future Opportunities
The Old Town infrastructure projects currently underway, especially on Braddock and Cameron, provide an opportunity to improve bike-ped safety at critical intersections and implement traffic calming measures to promote shared roadway accommodations for bikes on designated through routes both east-west and north-south.
The majority of the downtown area could benefit greatly from the Winchester-Frederick County Metropolitan Planning Organization Bike and Pedestrian Mobility Study which was conducted by Toole Design Group, who created the DC area Bike Plan. The study recommended a set of standards for bike-ped facilities focusing on specific design solutions for retro fit, connecting existing routes, and new construction. Essential to this guidance will be the utilization of a Bicycle Suitability Analysis to determine appropriate measures necessary to provide safe accommodations for A-, B- and C-level cyclists.
